Maria Kazanskaya grew up in the old Russian city of
Samara by the Volga river. She started drawing and painting as a child,
and chose art as her profession very early. After graduating cum
laude from Samara Art College, she continued her education at the
famous Stroganoff Institute of Art and Industrial Design in Moscow,
where she studied drawing with Lev Mikhailov and painting with Nina
Lordkipanidze.
Maria's worldview as an artist was shaped by early 20th Century Russian and French painting. She draws inspiration from the beauty of the world, and she sees art as re-expressing this beauty in its own idiosyncratic language. Select group and solo shows: Museum of Contemporary Russian Art in Jersey City, New Jersey; Union Street Gallery and Mary Bell Galleries in Chicago; Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis; Berkeley University YWCA Weir Gallery in Berkeley, California. Windwood Gallery, New York Images Gallery, New York
Public collections: East Bay Regional Park District, Oakland, CA State Bank of Countryside, Chicago, Illinois; Maria's works are also in many private collections in the U.S., Germany, and Russia, and she has illustrated two books of poetry.
